TikTok the Tipping Point

(Inspired by Ben Thompson, a tech writer, who wrote about US potentially banning TikTok)

The Watershed

  • In 2001, Beijing won the bid to host the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
  • Late 2001, China became a member of the World Trade Organization.
  • In 2002, China’s men football team made it to the World Cup Group Stage. That was its first and only time to have made it into the world stage (Though it was utter humiliation 🙈 as China scored 0 goals and lost every single game they played) (😲 btw, the Chinese women’s football team had made the World Cup Group Stage since 1991, and missed it only once since then 💁🏻‍♀️)
  • In December of the same year, Shanghai won the voting and was awarded the host city of the 2010 World Expo.

Vengeance and Mastery

The Default Effect

Dancing 🐈 & I❤️🇨🇳

  • TikTok acquired 800 million active users in 3 years since its launch. (for comparison, Instagram took 7 years to get to 800 million active users, and Twitter has only 330 million active users ),
  • 41% of its users are between the ages of 16 and 24.
  • As of May 2020, there are 30 million monthly active users in the United States alone. TikTok has outperformed all its competitors, and users reward it with loyalty and adoption. Most significantly, many teens today default to TikTok as their primary source of entertainment:
  • July 2018, TikTok users spend an average of 52 minutes a day on the app
  • 90% say they use the app on a daily basis.

The War of Stories

Censored #BlackLivesMatter and #GeorgeFloyd
Blocked a teenager discussing China’s genocide in Xinjiang
Blocked a video of Tank Man
TikTok’s guidelines that censored Tiananmen Square, Tibetan independence, and the Falun Gong
Appeared to be censoring the Hong Kong protests and Houston Rockets basketball team
