SARS Taught Us 1 Thing: Panic, because We Know Nothing

The reasons why we in Hong Kong hoard face masks and hand sanitisers

Yields in facemasks are better than that of $APPL

“Individual precaution does not scale to collective precaution…. Hence one must panic individually in order to avoid systemic problems.”

Nassim Taleb

When SARS happened, we had a very limited view of what other parts of the world thought. After all, in 2003, the popular smartphones were candy bar phones from Nokia and the only place to digitally broadcast our mundane personal mumblings was … Friendster.

The image that was seared into every Hong Kongers’ consciousness

Why Daffy should have worn a mask
  • We knew very little about viruses and pandemics, and there would always be new ways we would get infected and screwed
  • How fragile our medical systems were against a new virus, and how terrifyingly bad it could quickly get when they were overwhelmed
  • We could be infected AND contagious without any symptoms for days
  • Masks were only effective in stopping us from spreading the virus, but not to protect us from it
  • Sanitisers were effective and practical alternatives to washing hands
  • Wear a mask at all times, so we limit the chance of us spreading it unknowingly (more than for protecting ourselves), for the sake of others and our medical systems
  • Sanitise often
  • Stay home
  • Practice good pooping etiquettes and become an u-pipes expert
